Chelsea Sign Caicedo on British Record £115M: Mauricio Pochettino Begins Stamford Bridge Era, Draws Against Liverpool

Chelsea agreed a deal with Brighton & Hove Albion worth  £115m plus a sell-on clause for Moises Caicedo. The Blues faced Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in their first Premier League game on Super Sunday. Luis Diaz opened the scoring for Liverpool in the first half. However, Chelsea fought back with an equalizer Axel Disasi, who made his first Premier Debut for Chelsea. Also, Ben Chilwell’s and Mohamed Salah’s goals were ruled out by VAR for offside.

Match Highlights and Reports as Chelsea Secure a Stalemate Against Liverpool

Key Moments:

  • 18th minute – Luis Diaz converts an early cross from Mohamed Salah into a goal for Liverpool.
  • 29′ minute – Mohamed Salah’s goal that was supposed to double the Red’s lead is ruled out by VAR for a potential offside.
  • 37 minute – Axel Disasi scores an equalizer in his Premier League Debut for Chelsea at a very close range.
  • 39 minute: Two minutes later, Ben Chilwell looks to give Chelsea a comeback lead. However, the goal is disallowed for offside as well.

Chelsea were more clinical and could have secured all three points at Stamford Bridge. However, Klopp’s side were attack-minded, which made them take control of the game sometimes. Mauricio Pochettino was glad to begin his journey at Stamford Bridge with a hard foreign stalemate and is looking forward to improving his side. No player on the pitch won more possession than Conor Gallagher.

Jurgen Klopp sparkled the game by introducing new energy like Darwin Nunez. The Reds had a working attack, but the defense and midfield needed balance, which helped the hosts get back into the game. Klopp’s side found it hard because Chelsea had made many changes, which seemed to fit well, unlike last season’s system.

Chelsea vs. Liverpool Team News

Four Chelsea players made their first Premier League debut against Liverpool, including Robert Sanchez, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, and Nicolas Jackson. Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino did not include goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga due to a possible loan move to Real Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp handed out debuts to midfield duo Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Darwin Nunez did not start against Chelsea as Klopp made Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Mohamed Salah his preferred attacking start-up.

Liverpool agreed with Brighton for a British record £111m transfer of midfielder Moises Caicedo. However, the Reds were dealt an early blow when Moises Caicedo told Liverpool he only wanted to join Chelsea. Both clubs threw big evaluations to the 21-year-old.

Chelsea were not giving up on the midfielder until they reached a deal to sign Caicedo for a British record transfer fee of £115m plus a sell-on clause for Brighton. Moises Caicedo will sign a contract with Chelsea until June 2031 with an option until 2032. Chelsea is understood to be paying an initial £100m PLUS £15m in performance-related add-ons.

The signing of Moises Caisedo from Brighton brings Chelsea to a £821,000,000 transfer fee in three windows. The 2023/24 season will determine whether it’s money well spent.
