Erik ten Hag is Facing Big Transfer Decisions at Manchester United

After picking up the Carabao Cup in the thrilling 22/23 PL season, Manchester United found themselves in a tough summer, aiming to keep up with the positive progress under manager Erik ten Hag. The club seems to be heading in the right direction, but it requires more players to leave as those arriving at Old Trafford. Eric ten Hag is facing serious obstacles just a few days after the opening of the 2023/24 summer transfer window.

A striker, goalkeeper, and center-back are several positions the Dutch coach wants to strengthen his side. The Red Devils could spend a lot on transfers this window. How much the club will spend depends heavily on the ongoing “change of ownership.”

Which Striker Should Manchester United Sign?

Manchester United’s main target is to sign a prime striker to bolster their attack this summer. Wout Weghorst, the January loanee, didn’t offer much to secure a permanent position since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Saudi side Al Nassr.

Harry Kane was rumored to be Erik ten Hag’s primary option and the best value for the money. However, Daniel Levy’s demands forced Manchester United to pull out of the race. Goncalo Ramos, Victor Osimhen, Rasmus Hojlund, and Randal Kolo Muani remain available options if the Harry Kane deal doesn’t go through. Erik ten Hag has to decide which one suits his style of play being implemented at Old Trafford.

Which Center-Back Should Manchester Look For?

Manchester United has been linked to a few center-back since Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane established a non-debatable first choice for Erik ten Hag. Kim Min-Jae remains the Red Devil’s main target despite Bayern getting closer to reaching a complete agreement to sign the Napoli center-back.

Harry Maguire will likely leave Old Trafford, having been linked with a move to Tottenham Spurs. Should Harry Maguire leave, there are a few candidates for the armband, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.

More defenders, including Alex Telles, Eric Bailly, and Brandon Williams, are available for sale this summer. After a promising season, Erik ten Hag will likely keep Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Diogo Dalot.

Which Goalkeeper Should Replace David de Gea?

David de Gea has been a long-serving player for the Red Devils since 2011, when Alex Ferguson signed him from Atletico Madrid. The 32-year-old is out of contract, and if the parties fail to get a new agreement, he could leave this summer or extend it by a year.

Football pundits view Brentford’s GK David Raya as an excellent option to replace the Spanish goalie. Also, Andre Onana remains a target for the Red Devils after Chelsea reportedly pulled out of the race for the Inter Milan goalie.

How Far Does the Transfer Saga Go?

Manchester United takeover is an ongoing process with a decision yet to happen. Therefore, the club needs to sell some players to raise additional transfer funds to supplement their budget over the upcoming few months. Other players for sale include Dean Henderson, Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, Fred, and Anthony Elanga.

Jadon Sancho has also fallen short following his expensive £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund. It might be too early for Erik ten Hag to give up on the 23-year-old player. However, Tottenham have reportedly targeted the winger by plotting a £50 million bid.

Another midfielder is needed despite the need to strengthen the attack, defense, and goal. Manchester United have Casemiro and Eriksen at their disposal. However, there is a need for a backup option.

Mason Mount’s transfer to Old Trafford has been heavily speculated. However, Chelsea has rejected Manchester United’s’ original bid. However, the Red Devils will turn up with an improved bid to match the Blue’s demands.

Amad Diallo had a stellar season loan with the Black Cats and will return to Old Trafford. The Ivorian led Sunderland into playoffs by contributing 14 goals on the Wearside.

Having only started ten games under Erik ten Hag(fewer games since 2018/19), Scott McTominay has yet to prove himself to fit in the first XI. The Scottish midfielder has had injury issues, and selling him could add much to this summer’s transfer funds. Newcastle United leads in the race to sign Scott McTominay. However, United is asking for a £50 million bid to part ways with the midfielder.
